The waiting game
A couple months ago I was talking to a tween at church about how she wanted to get her ears pierced. I recounted my own testimony of being the last fourth-grader at Deerfield to have permanent holes in their ear lobes. Which is something I’m grateful for now. I’m stronger for it. I’ve now had over 20 years of having my ears pierced, and the waiting then seems small now.
I tried to channel that energy a few weeks ago when I found out that Chris just got a haircut because he needed a haircut, and not because this was a proposal haircut. We might be a couple of haircuts out from the haircut. Only time will tell. I’m happy to wait until the right haircut, I really am.
And now, I am waiting for the power at my house to be restored. Kansas City was hit with a thunder/wind combo that took down thousands of old beautiful trees, and a whole lot of electric lines. The pole attached to the meter at my house got snapped, and word on the street is Wednesday at the soonest.
I’m fine, everything will be fine. I needed to deep clean my fridge anyway. It’s just the long waiting now that will seem so short later.
Other than that, the last two weeks have been so great!
Number One: Boston/Maine highlights
Let me say this, we perfectly paced our trip. I would absolutely do the following sched again:
Sunday: fly into major city. Monday: drive to national park with fun stops along the way. Tuesday/Wednesday: experience the outdoors. Thursday: drive back to major city with a fun dinner reservation. Friday: tool around major city, end the day with a baseball game. Saturday: fly home.
Five things I loved:
Bar Harbor firework show on the 4th of July. I have never come close to seeing so many fireworks. It was magic.
We rented e-bikes from Acadia Bike and rode the carriage trails all day Wednesday at the recommendation of our friends Ben and Bethany. It was so so fun. There was a ton to see, but we were mostly in the interior of the park, so we missed some of costal Acadia. We were able to avoid the crowds, use “sport mode” up the hills, and enjoy some really serene moments along the trail.
Our whale-watching tour got cancelled twice over, so we signed up for a sunset cruise through Acadian Boat Tours. At first the tour guide was a little, oh boy, this guy. But in the end, we learned a lot, saw a lot, and watched the most spectacular sunset. We also did a sunset cruise in Lisbon after a big hiking day last year, and I think that’s a travel hack: schedule a boat ride to end the day your legs will be most tired.
My friend Morgan said she had the best pasta of her life at Sportello in Boston, and it did not disappoint. Life-changing gnocchi. You can skip the $14 cocktail that’s just functionally a flavored shot.
Chris is a baseball parks guy, and getting to experience Fenway with him, gosh, it was just so so special.
(Not a love, just a tip) I generally avoid downloading apps if I can help it. I just like having as few apps as possible on my phone. But I downloaded the American Airlines app, just for this trip. And when our out-bound flight got cancelled last minute I was able to re-book a different route in less than two minutes. Easy peasy, and I was so grateful for a quick solution. Will do again. Might not fly American again if I can help it.
Number Two: The Quarterback
Ok mixed feelings on this one because it both made me excited about football season and reminded me how long football season is. But if you are gearing up for the fall, this is a great Netflix watch. Kirk Cousins, what a freaking cutie.
Number Three: Someone Else’s Shoes
I listened to this book and thought it was so charming. Some tender female friendship moments. I do think it’s best as an audiobook because its not like the most rich thing you’ll read this year.
Number Four: The best way to watch the new Mission Impossible (not on a plane)
On the way to Boston I watched the first Mission Impossible. On my phone. Who?Weekly host Bobby Finger went out of his way to watch the most recent MI five different ways. This article is an absolute hoot.
Number Five: Half Price Books delivers
Every time I sell books at Half Price Books, I’m like “I should come here for my book club books.” But ya know, the local HPB is not guaranteed to have exactly what I’m looking for, so I was online checking inventory this week, and lo and behold you can order online and the shipping was super fast. Economical choice for those books you want for longer than three weeks but don’t want to commit to a new copy.
