How many leaves can a girl expect to drag to the curb in a given fall?
Last Sunday, as I was inspecting my split ends, I wondered, “when will my hair start to feel too long?” So I scheduled a hair cut. On Tuesday, I woke up and my hair felt too long. Like much too long. Since then four separate people have asked me, “are you ok?”
I’m doing great actually, it’s just that every time I lean my head back my hair gets caught.
Anyway, I wrote about quitting running over at my friend Nicole’s newsletter.
I wrote about this deeply affecting documentary displaying public opinion about the invasion in Ukraine in Russia for my homework.
And I wrote this sentence that contains a link to my instagram. My Nuuly referral link. My Outdoor Voices link. And a tender reminder that you can support this newsletter by becoming a paid subscriber.
Number One: Comfortable Kitchen Zuppa Toscona
When I was in high school, my mom went through a soup phase. Four nights a week (it felt like) she would say, “I could eat soup every day!” Before we tucked into another soup. Because I am a stubborn middle child, this caused me to hate soup for a long time. But I’m coming around on it. I get it now, soup is easy. Soup is an excuse to eat bread. Soup is, dare I say, good.
We made this soup a few weeks ago on Recipe Monday and I could not stop raving about it. Hefty without being cheesy. Which I love. GREAT on the re-heat. Lots of replaceable ingredients if you don’t already have stuff on hand. I can’t wait to make it again!
Number Two: The Crane Wife
My sister gave me a copy of The Crane Wife because she knows me so well. Easily one of my favorite reads of 2022. A mish-mash of essays about love and heartache? Absolutely my jam. I laughed, I teared up, I processed. I loved it. It’s the kind of book I want to write, so I guess it’s also the kind of book I like to read.
You may remember the author from when her titular essay was in The Paris Review.
As we’re getting in that head space: I think this book would make a great gift for a friend.
Number Three: Roku City // My Eight Deranged Days on the Gone Girl Cruise
Two fun articles for you as you avoid reading other emails in your inbox.
Who doesn’t love wondering: what if we kissed in Roku City?
There was a Gone Girl-themed cruise. Gillian Flynn was there and everything.
Number Four: The Mole
I think I’m ready to say my favorite category of television lately is competition reality shows that have nothing to do with romance. Shows where people honestly say, “I’m here for the money.”
While you’re waiting on new episodes of Survivor to drop, I highly recommend The Mole on Netflix. It’s fun!
Number Five: Don’t Give Up on your Hardest Day
My friend Emily was recently sharing about a challenge, and she shared the advice she had been given, “don’t give up on your hardest day.” And it’s been rattling around in my head ever since.
You have freedom to take breaks, to step back, to quit; but don’t give up on your hardest day. Let your hardest day be the hardest day, but not the day you gave up.
An Alpaca from this weekend:
