Not done yet!
I just don’t want to end Five Things in the two-twenties, so we’re still cruisin. I leave for vacation next week, but I’ll be back!
Have a good week! Make wise choices. I hope today is beautiful for you.
Number One: These Sunglasses
You know when someone is like, “people keep asking me about my mop?” And it’s like, no one is asking you about your mop.
Well three people have asked me about my sunglasses, so I’m linking them now.
For what it’s worth, I still like the O-Cedar mop.
Number Two: Harrison Scott Key does it again!
I’m not even done, but I’m ready to Five Things How to Stay Married. If you want to read a book that captures how I wish I could write AND dunks on the Presbyterians while also loving them, this is a great read. Charming, funny, philosophical in good ways.
Number Three: Make the photo book you’ve been thinking about making
I have spent most of my adult life thinking about making a photo book, and then not making that photo book because I thought it would be too much work. It is literally so easy to upload your photos to Shutterfly and get a photo book a week later. The worst thing you can do is dilly dally, which is what I’ve been doing up until now. I needed to stop worrying about ~aesthetic~ and just dedicate an hour of my life to making sure the crop was right.
Number Four: Be wary of people who want to make you mad
I saw this social media post that has been rattling around in my brain for a few weeks, but I can’t remember where I saw it. So just track with me: basically the person was saying that the way of Jesus was not getting people riled up about specific causes. It’s a way a mercy, compassion, healing, getting close to people society had pushed to the margins. So if someone is really getting you riled up, that’s not from Jesus. And I think that’s a good word.
Number Five: Happy Birthday
I just love when one person starts singing “Happy Birthday” and little by little the noise grows. By the third “to you” there’s harmony, there’s dissonance. And then it’s over. I love it.
Bonus: WPA Slave stories
One of my favorite history professors in college got us riled up in the positive about the Works Progress Administration. Whenever I see a WPA bridge, I think of him.
Anyway, this Juneteenth I learned about the WPA project that involved interviewing people who had been victims of chattel slavery about their experiences. You can read some of the narratives here. You should read one this week! I think it will move you to compassion and not anger, but if it does move you to anger it will be anger towards slavery, so.
