It’s been a great weekend and a great week. I am also ready for my annual “February is getting to me” confession, despite it being 50 degrees and sunny. What is it about February? It’s just so hard to get out of bed and be patient with people. Soon we will be sweating. Oh the sands of time…
Anyway, here’s a pic from last Sunday. Chris is celebrating that the Chiefs won, I’m celebrating that football season is over, and that the Chiefs won. A true win-win.
I wrote this sentence that contains a link to my instagram. My Nuuly referral link. My Outdoor Voices link.
Number One: Zach Bryan
Laura introduced me to Zach Bryan. Ideal cowboy for the moment. Great music for listening to in the car, on a walk, while working.
Start with: Oklahoma Smokeshow // Codeine Pills // Twenty So // Burn Burn Burn
Number Two: Free People Socks
Makenzie gave me these socks for Christmas and they have become the socks I reach for. Dollars per wear, we are in the pennies here. Makenzie and I like to talk about things in life you reach for. The coffee mug you reach for, the jeans you reach for, the snacks you reach for. It’s kind of a helpful compass when discerning if you should part with an item. Do I reach for it? Will I ever? What’s the point of hanging onto kiwi socks I got as a joke and never wear? Or the Yeti tumbler with a mermaid pattern? I never reach for that.
Number Three: also ready to admit that I don’t like avocados in smoothies
A few months back I was on a “freeze vegetables before they go bad” kick which really made me feel like I was doing something both for my bank account and the environment. A core issue is that I haven’t figured out how to enjoy once-fresh veggies. I have thrown them in soups, sure. But I’ve mostly given up on the endeavor.
I do still love to put frozen spinach in my smoothies. Frozen avocado is bad. I probably even suggested frozen avo in the past because it creates a real creaminess. But they just bring down the flavor. So don’t start. Just eat your avocados before they go bad. Sorry to earth.
Number Four: Keeping a gratefulness list
Back when I was in college Ann Voskamp’s “1000 Gifts” was the White Lady Christian Book of the moment. I read 1/3 of it, but felt inspired enough to make my own list of 1000 gifts. Or rather a list of things I’m thankful for.
Gratefulness lists are truly the ultimate life hack. I am more mindful and overall happier when I have an ongoing list that I add things to every day. For me it looks like keeping a list of up to 1000 things in each of my journals. I usually make it to about 600 by the time I’m buying a fresh moleskine. I keep my “gifts” to one sentence and try to not judge the things I’m thankful for. I also try to not repeat myself, although it is inevitable. I have put a limit on the number of times I can write out, “the way Honey curls up on her bed so cute.”
Number Five: Polenta
I am reaching for Zach Bryan on Spotify, and I am reaching for polenta served with some kind of meat on a menu. Polenta is one of those foods that I’m not really sure what it is, I just know I like it. It’s like cheese grits but for people who don’t like grits.
Favorite polenta in KC right now:
Pork Shoulder with Polenta at Lazia
Short Rib with Polenta at Cafe Trio
Short Rib with Polenta at Rockhill Grille (this was a non-menu special, but it’s worth asking about)
