Little bitty moments
I’m trying to be on my phone less when I’m in waiting situations, which really just means I’m staring at people in public more. Today, I was sitting at a cafe and at the table across from me was presumably a mother and daughter. Without making too many assumptions, it looked like the mom had some physical limitations. At one point, the daughter brought her chair around and help her mom put on lipstick, then put on her own gloss, and they took a picture. It was just a tender moment that I am glad I spied on.
Here’s the situation: Honey, the dog, wants a Bar K membership for the summer. She told me last night. I need eight more paid subscribers to make that happen in the ole Summer budget, so this is my pitch to you: supporting this newsletter not only means you get a bonus newsletter every month, as well as more “personal news life updates” from me, and you get the satisfaction of supporting this newsletter and keeping it free and breezy for everyone else. THIS SUMMER ONLY: you could be a part of finding me a husband; listen this dog LOVES men, and she has a great smile, and I just have a hunch that this bar-dog park combo could be the ticket. Just consider it.
Next week, there will be no Five Things. I’m taking my week off early and then the week after will be a guest writer, followed by subscribers only. Regular programming in June. Taking July off as is Five Things tradition.
This sentence now has links to the my instagram, and old issues of the newsletter. Also my Nuuly referral link. I hope today is beautiful for you.
Number One: If nothing else, clean out the ice drawer
I’m sure there’s like an actual psychological term for this but sometimes all I need is for one tiny project to be done, and I feel like the queen of productivity. That for me this weekend was emptying out the ice drawer. Now, if you come over to my house you can sip easy knowing the ice is only a few days old. For now.
Number Two: Girls on the Run
Volunteering as a coach with girls on the run has been 49% pure chaotic energy, 51% joyful pride. By the end of the season I think I may say more than 51% on the second part, but our team is c h a o t i c.
There was a practice where girls wrote down phrases that “clouded their star power” and then we helped them find a phrase that brought their star power back. I ran with a fourth grader who is objectively not chubby, but one of the phrases she wrote was “I’m chubby.” It broke my heart in two, mostly because yeah, that’s an idea that been clouding my own star power for as long as I can remember. I’ve worked so hard, especially in the last few years, to have a good relationship with my body and exercise and food. And Girls on the Run just makes me really hopeful for the future of our girls. Like they’re chaotic, but just maybe they have a fighting chance to make the world a softer place for others and themselves?
Anyway, I have no chill about it right now because we had our practice 5k last week, and I’m so proud. And if you have a medium-flexible job and a little bit of patience, I think you should consider coaching with GOTR where you live.
Number Three: Is the Stanley Cup worth the hype?
Pros: it fits in the car cup holder. It keeps your beverages cold. It’s a conversation starter.
Cons: the straw is long and I’m worried it’s giving me smoker lips.
This is actually making me think of something: Saturday morning I went to the City Market with my friend Hannah. City Market is approaching market saturation when it comes to fresh cut bouquet stands, there are at least six, with not a lot of differentiation. Every fourth girl in her 20’s was carrying around a bouquet. I wanted be like “basic” but actually felt like “go off! Embrace being basic! Get the photo op! It’s a beautiful day! Buy yourself flowers!” Which reminded me it is: Our Dolly Year: A year to embrace being basic.
Number Four: My favorite tree
I love this tree that’s outside of Split Log in KCK. I love having a favorite tree. This tree has personality. This tree is unaffected by seasons. It’s a great tree. Would encourage you to find your own favorite tree. Or we can share this one! Enough tree to go around!
Number Five: Song round up
I’m still loving the Indigo Playlist on Spotify.
Hair Salon - I first heard this song on TikTok and it’s supreme. It beautifully encapsulates what it’s like when you have to pretend you didn’t hear something about a crush.
Waxahachie - not just a sign that you’re close to Dallas on your way from Waco anymore.
Russell County Line - I just like it. If you wonder how I’m doing, know that I am doing fine.
Anything but Me - not from Indigo, but I dig it. If you like HAIM you’ll like this.
