New new job
Last week I started a new new job. Which you might be thinking, Katherine didn’t you just start a new job after applying for jobs for like a year? I did, and I didn’t plan it this way, it’s just the way it happened. Sometimes when it rains, it pours.
Some people know, some people don’t: before I moved to Kansas City I worked for a church in Texas. The situation was objectively bad. I was ready to leave going to church behind for a while, maybe take a pause on faith, let alone ever go back into full time ministry. Actually I was quite certain that that was a no for me.
There’s a long story and a short story, but the summary is this: as of last week I am Ministry Director at Christ Church Mission. Baby, I am back, and this time I’m Anglican.
I would say more but I’m getting a little weepy, and there’s still homework to do.
Last Sunday was the first on the job, and as an introduction, I was asked icebreakers at each service, with no time to prepare an answer. That last part is important because when asked to name a celebrity, dead or alive, I would want to have dinner with, I said the first person that came to mind: Kim Kardashian. It killed. Below is photo evidence.
I kind of thought everyone would forget by today, but instead I was justifying to parishioners in their sixties why I chose the former closet organizer over, I don’t know, Christ himself. But here’s the deal, I’ll be spending eternity with Jesus, we will have plenty of time. I am less certain about Kim.
For a long time I thought that I wouldn’t get to see the redemption of that season in Texas on this side of eternity. I made as much peace as I could with that blip in my story. But in the four years since I left, and increasingly in the year since I started going to Christ Church, I’ve experienced so much grace and healing. And it’s just been really sweet and good, and I’m grateful. And I just feel like never say never, ya know?
More to come, I’m sure.
This sentence now has links to the my instagram, and old issues of the newsletter. Also my Nuuly referral link. I hope today is beautiful for you.
Number One: I love my friends
Speaking of Kardashians, I can’t remember how Kris Jenner’s 30th birthday video first got on my radar, but I love it. It’s so chaotic. And as a reminder to my friends: I turn 30 next year. The time to start planning is now.
Cheesecake Factory. Lots of tennis. Baby Showers. I love my friends.
Number Two: The Girlfriend Collective Dress
On theme with never say never: longtime readers of Five Things will know that I am an Outdoor Voices exercise dress truther. It’s so great. However if I had a complaint, it would be that I find myself adjusting the shorts more than I would like to. The flip side of that coin, is that as a person with thighs, it’s like, show me a pair of shorts I don’t have to adjust… And I can: the Girlfriend Collective Athena dress.
It’s more of a challenge to put on than the OV dress, and I miss the thin straps. But it might just be objectively better??
Whenever I talk about exercise dresses, people always ask, but where do I wear it? Great Q. I would start at the farmer’s market and go from there. I like playing tennis in my dresses. I like going on walks in my dresses. I like doing yard work in my dresses.
Number Three: A lil dog park water bottle
This is just a great little water bottle for your dog.
Number Four: Using a plunger to unclog the shower
After having just about other plumbing emergency at my house in the last eight months, the shower finally clogged. With three girls with thick hair, we were long overdue for it. I tried the usual: drain-o, baking soda and vinegar, boiling water, just wishing it away. None of it made a substantial amount of progress.
Google then told me to try a plunger which sounded better than calling a plumber. It took some time and effort, but it fully cleared whatever was backing up the shower drain.
Number Five: The Olive and June cuticle pusher
At the suggestion of every fifth podcast ad, I bought some Olive and June nail polish, press-on nails, and nail kit. I think I maybe had to buy the kit to buy the press on nails, I don’t remember. I’m neither here nor there on the polish. I like the press on nails, but am not planning a total re-brand. Let me tell you about the cuticle pusher though: it’s wonderful. It’s so good. It works so well without making your nails or cuticles hurt. I’ve always had jenky cuticles, and I HATE when I’m getting a manicure and they mess with them.
