Skort season!
I’m grateful it’s May. I hope everyone remembered to pay rent yesterday, but if you didn’t, let this serve as a reminder. I’m grateful we’re approaching 80 degree weather in KC. I am my most me when it is 80 degrees. And I’ll say it, I’m grateful the sermon at church this morning was short.
I am feeling hopeful. I’m taking a pottery class with my sister this month, and I am very excited to have intentional artsy time. I signed up for summer tennis lessons too. Activity girl summer, here I come. Might mess around and try rock climbing again.
Last week, one Brian Turnbough was confused when Five Things didn’t hit his inbox, and said to me, “I thought I was on the list.” To which I said, “Brian, you’re on the list, but not on the list.”
You can get on the list by clicking below. Last week I wrote a mini-personal essay, and I think that’s going to be the move for the last issue of every month for the foreseeable future. Sign up!
This sentence now has links to the my instagram, and old issues of the newsletter.
You can still have a bunch of Five Things stickers and magnets, so sign up here and eagerly await some snail mail. If you have signed up in the last two weeks, your mail is coming as of tomorrow.
Number One: Natural Deodorant Updates
I was talking to a friend this afternoon about how when/if I’m ever a mom, I am going to be the mom that is always seeing injuries happen before they happen, and therefore a little high-strung. But I don’t want to be that mom, I want to be breezy and cool. And really, I don’t want to be someone who lives in a constant state of fear.
Which I lead with, because I get kind of irked when people use fear-based pressure to get others to make the switch to “natural” products. We live in a world of toxins, calm down. Plus there is no science that says that traditional deodorants cause breast cancer.
That said, I did fully make the switch to natural deodorant in the last year. And I feel like I can safely say I sweat less, and have embraced the end of the day BO.
Here are my random little thoughts:
The detox phase took longer than I thought it would, maybe like two months - there were some truly stinky days in there
I have found Native to be the best, most dependable brand. I wanted to love MegaBabe, but it was not for me.
I really and truly think that I am sweating less. Like I still sweat from activity and exercise, but just normal sitting at my desk at work sweat is way down.
Is is officially too personal how much I have talked about sweat here?
Number Two: OPI 28
OPI 28 is the dip nail color we’re all getting this summer. It is cute, it is girly, it is subtle. Get in honey, we’re going to West Plaza Nails.
Number Three: Hair Donations and Joshes
Too many people are trying to donate their hair, which is an interesting problem to have.
A bunch of Joshes got together in Nebraska to decide who would be the ultimate Josh. Tender.
Number Four: Simone Biles joins Athleta!
Simone and I both want the Sculptex pants to come back! I’m proud of her and happy for one of my favorite brands. I think it’s really cool to have a major athlete sign with a certified B Corp, especially coming from Nike - I will be bringing this up in my presentation on ethical fashion retailers tomorrow.
This WSJ piece has more spiciness about Nike, but if you run into the pay wall, ESPN talked about it too.
Number Five: A fun Zillow find
I tried to see if Kim Mulkey’s house has been listed in Waco, and that’s still unclear. What is clear, is that I have a lot of questions about this property. Mostly, why? And, second, Becca, is this in my budget, yes/no? I’m not pre-approved for $6.5 Million? Ok.
Song to add to your “Just girly things” playlist: Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding; heard this one in Trader Joe’s this week and couldn’t help but sing along
